Getting the most out of WorthSafe

Habits that turn a list of accounts into a picture of your progress.

Update on a rhythm, not on impulse

One pass a month, for the previous month-end, is enough. Set the reminder to monthly, and when it arrives open Update Values, set the date to the last day of the month, and work down the list. A year of this gives you a genuine trend line rather than a scatter of random snapshots.

Record the value even when nothing changed

A flat month is information too. If a balance genuinely has not moved, re-entering it is not required — but for anything that fluctuates, a recorded value at each month-end makes the growth trend meaningful.

Watch liquid net worth, not just net worth

Net worth can rise entirely because a house was revalued, while your actual room to manoeuvre shrinks. Liquid net worth is the number that tells you what you could do if you had to.

Check your concentration once a year

The Institution Exposure report shows what share of your money sits with each bank or broker. Deposit protection schemes cap what is guaranteed per institution, so this is worth a look even when nothing is wrong.

Use the as-of date to answer real questions

Set the report date to 31 December and run the Net Worth Summary for a clean year-end figure. Compare two year-ends to see what a year actually did.

Keep the handoff in mind

The most valuable thing in WorthSafe may be the thing you never use yourself: a complete list of what exists and where it is. Account numbers, nominees, storage locations and a document scan turn a list of balances into something a family member could act on. Generate the Family Handoff Dossier once a year and store it somewhere they can find.

Be honest about what counts

The inclusion settings exist so your net worth means what you want it to mean. If you would never sell your home, excluding it gives you a number that reflects your investable wealth. There is no single right answer — but pick one and stay consistent, or your trend line measures your settings rather than your progress.
